SCL QUESTION 1

List your ideal desktop and laptop hardware specification and explain why.

Our group ideal hardware

Intel Core i7-4930MX

We had choose the Intel Core i7-4930MX as our ideal processor because it is a high-end quad-core processor for laptops and successor of the i7-3940mx. It is based on the Haswell architecture and was launched in Q2/2013. Due to Hyperthreading, the four cores can handle up to eight threads in parallel leading to better utilization of the CPU. Each core offers a base speed of 3.0 GHz but can dynamically increase clock rates with Turbo Boost up to 3.7 GHz for 4 active cores, 3.8 GHz for 2 active cores and 3.9 GHz for 1 active core. Furthermore, the Extreme CPUs offer an unlocked multiplicator for easy overclocking.
Haswell is the successor to the Ivy Bridge architecture with improvements on both GPU and CPU performance. The CPUs are produced in 22nm and offer an optimized branch prediction as well as additional execution ports, improving especially the Hyper-Threading performance. Furthermore, new features like AVX2 and FMA should increase the performance in future applications.
Due to these changes, the performance per clock has been improved by about 10 percent compared to Ivy Bridge. Therefore, the 4930MX is about 10 % faster than other processor. Below are the specification of this powerful processor.

Intel HD Graphics 4600

Among the latest, the Intel HD Graphics 4600 (GT2) is a processor graphics card included in some of the Haswell processors of 2013. The base clock can be automatically overclocked using Turbo Boost technology. Depending on the processor model, the turbo clock rates (1150 - 1350 MHz) and shared L3 cache may differ greatly resulting in varying graphics performance between CPU models.

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M

Based on our discussion we had plus this hardware to our ideal hardare because the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M is a high-end DirectX 11-compatible graphics card for laptops. It is based on the same chip as the GeForce GTX 680MX but offers a higher core clock at a lower TDP. It is based on the 28nm GK104 Kepler architecture similar to the GTX 680M, but features more CUDA cores (1536 vs. 1344), a higher clock rate and GPU Boost 2.0. As of summer 2013, it is the fastest laptop graphics card on the market.
As a novelty, the GeForce 700M series implements GPU Boost 2.0 to automatically overclock the core clock rate. Depending on the cooling headroom of the laptop and the application / game, up to 15 % performance gains are possible.
